A NEW ROBOTIC PLATFORM FOR REMOTE SURVEILLANCE OF ELDERLY PEOPLE

Shin-ichiro Kaneko, Genci Capi

In this paper, we describe a tele-operated mobile robot system for the elderly surveillance in hospitals and nursing homes. The robot navigates along the corridor placed landmarks autonomously by image processing and utilizing depth sensor data, while monitoring unusual situation of elderly people like lying on the floor. The landmarks are placed at important position e.g. room entrance and corner, and they contain operational order. If any troubles occur, the robot recognizes them by image processing and informs to the operator immediately. For the emergency situation, the operator can check loss of unconsciousness and vital condition manually by utilizing an interactive communication user interface and an equipped sensor arm with a haptic device. The preliminary surveillance experiments showed a good performance.
