The need for a more efficient transit system has led transport authorities in urban centres to implement Automatic Vehicle Location Systems (AVLS). This enables transport authorities to observe, collect and analyze location information about a commuter vehicle in real time and transmit this information to the transport management centres and passengers. This paper focuses on the development of a Global Positioning System (GPS) based AVLS. Components used in developing the AVLS include GPS module, Global System for Mobile communication (GSM)/General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) module and an Arduino Uno Rev microcontroller; these components make up the In-Vehicle-Unit (IVU) to be installed in a commuter vehicle of interest. Deployment of the developed AVLS on a public bus transit shows that it can be effectively and accurately used to retrieve vehicle location information which could further avail transport management authorities the opportunity to monitor their vehicles cum drivers and ensure that they do not deviate from their assigned vehicle routes and schedules.
