WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORK BASED TRAFFIC MONITORING; OVERVIEW AND THREATS TO ITS SECURITY

Sareh Nasaghchi Kheirabadi , Dr Nitin. M. Kulkarni , Dr Arvind. D. Shaligram

The increased number of vehicles has caused a series of economic and social problems across the world. The economic viability of using wireless sensor networks to gather roads traffic monitoring data for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) becomes increasingly attractive. ITS systems are subject to security threats like any other information technology systems. Security should be considered as an integral part of ITS planning and deployment. There is a compelling need to identify and address the most severe security threats specific to the traffic monitoring sensor network. Here an analysis of possible threats to traffic monitoring system is presented using the European Telecommunications Standards Institute‘s (ETSI‘s) methodology and threats that pose the most significant risk to the system are identified. Necessary security services that satisfy the system‘s security objectives are listed.
