Kinidi L, Salleh SF, Wahab NA, Wei TA, Rahman NA and Atan MF

Nutrient pollution from Nitrogen is one of the common environmental issues involving surface waters. Excess Nitrogen discharged into the environment lowers water quality, brought risks to humans, impend habitats and ecosystems, and leads to eutrophication phenomenon at the receiving waters. There are several current methods being used for the removal of the ammoniacal Nitrogen in wastewater. Presently, phytoremediation is a cheap and reliable technological solution utilized to eliminate ammoniacal nitrogen from wastewaters. Presently, phytoremediation is regarded as one of the most economically viable, sustainable and affordable technology. Phytoremediation utilized plants reduce pollutants. This paper aims to gather about ammoniacal nitrogen in wastewater sources and effects in the environment. It also describes about phytoremediation technologies, including the ammoniacal nitrogen removal mechanisms. Additionally, it discussed the factors affecting the uptake mechanisms, the advantages and disadvantages of this phytoremediation were also discussed. Some of the promising wastewaters for phytoremediation are also reported.
